EXPERIMENTAL ANIMAL COLONY

1.1 Objectives

The experimental animal colony is one of the facility laboratories of the Institute of Biology. It is the first organized animal house created in Greece and its objective was and still is to support the basic and applicable research performed in the Institutes of NCSR “Demokritos”, and in laboratories outside the Centre, such as in other research centres, universities, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies.


1.2 Activities

The Experimental Animal Colony is an indispensable facility for the proper function of several laboratories in NCSR “Demokritos” and in the region of Attiki, in general. It maintains and reproduces inbred strains of experimental animals in healthy conditions. The following strains are currently available:

SWR swiss albino mice

Wistar albino rats and

NZW albino rabbits.

During the period 2000-2004, approx. 6,000 animals were produced and delivered to the users in NCSR “Demokritos” and to Universities and pharmaceutical companies.


1.3 Infrastrucutre: A complete set-up for animal breeding, according to State rules, is available.


1.4 Services provided: 1. Production and delivery of animal strains, 2. Helping the researchers in their experimentation, 3. Teaching students for animal breeding
